Los Angeles Blogger & Socialite Linda Nuves #WCW

As I may have mentioned a hundred times before, sisterhood and girl power are so incredibly important to me! I find it very intelligent, beneficial, and satisfying to connect with other women entrepreneurs, and to support and lift them up in their endeavors. Not only does it build you and others up up, but it also creates community and a sense of strength and power.

In my celebration of #WCW (Women Crush Wednesday) I'm going to begin honoring an inspiring and leading lady each week! This week I had the amazing pleasure to interview my great friend and fellow business lady and artist, Linda Nuves!

Linda is talented and dynamic woman who has a lot of style, passion, and beautiful energy to share with the world!

TIMMERY: Tell me about Linda Nuves. Who are you and what do you do?

LINDA: Linda Nuves, or simply just, Nuves, is the name I've given my higher self. It started out as my 'tagging' name when I stared doing street art in 2007 and then evolved into something greater. Having learned screen printing, I found myself designing clothes out of clothes (upcycling) and making jewelry out of found materials. I like to think I'm a Jane of many trades..

I have a small business making one and a quarter inch buttons for bands, brands, and artists + I'm an event producer/promoter/coordinator for a monthly event in Los Angeles called "BLANK", which is an 18 and over event at a divey venue called The Airliner + I'm also a blogger and work with various entertainment entities & for the past 6 or 7 years I've been in my dads Latin cover band, Azucar L.A. We performed music festivals, weddings, colleges, & other special events.

But above all, I pride myself in being a scholar. I love to learn new practices and fill my head with scholarly Information because I believe and know how history can repeat itself until we learn and move on from our past.

TIMMERY: Where does the name "Nuves" originate from?

LINDA: In 2007, I was in a very depressive state of mind. I had been writing lots of emo-poetry, after losing my Posse scholarship to attend Grinnell College (I'm working on a zine that explains that story), I found myself at my hometown's community college where I was introduced to the Screen Printing department. I met a lot of fascinating and talented artists, whose confidence and freedom I admired and had wished I acquired.

After befriending few of my colleagues, I learned that many of them had artist names. Some had been given to them, while others chose to name themselves. That's when I dubbed myself, Nuves (pronounced Nu-vez), after the clouds (nubes means clouds in Spanish). Of course, the spelling is different for phonetic reasons, as I didn't want to be called a nube or noob.

TIMMERY: What are some exciting projects you're currently working on?

LINDA: I'm in the process of creating a zine. ("A zine is most commonly a small circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images usually reproduced via photocopier."- Wikipedia) This zine is really close to my heart, as I will be revealing personal stories about my life. I'm still working on a title but I'm planning to realase the zine on my 28th birthday of this year (August 15).

TIMMERY: As a blogger, you're at the forefront of the Los Angeles culture and scene. What would you say is the most exciting thing happening in Los Angeles right now?

LINDA: Since I've been hosting/attending/coordinating events for the past 6 years in Los Angeles, I can honestly say the the most exciting thing happening now is witnessing and participating in the reconstruction of our communities. Gentrification is real. There has been a huge change in many of my local cities where a lot of young new residents have moved in or put up shop in communities where for years have been predominately been housed by people of color. The Unites States is a melting pot of people from all over the world. When you zero in on Los Angeles alone, you witness that amalgamation first hand. Now that my generation has turned into adults, and the younger generations are asking questions, looking for answers, I'm excited and looking forward to rebuilding a new-er Los Angeles, were discussions and critical thinking go hand in hand with creation and self expression.

TIMMERY: What are your goals as an entrepreneur?

LINDA: My goals as an entrepreneur have been to inspire others to aspire. If I can inspire someone with my story/experience then I can honestly say I succeeded in life. Money is not my number one motive however I do know what in our capitalistic society it makes the world go' round. And as someone who enjoys traveling, my goal is to share my experience world wide.

TIMMERY: What are your special talents that make you unique from others in your field?

LINDA: My boldness and free spirited attitude sets me apart from others in my field. It's because of those qualities that I've found myself traveling the world, meeting fascinating creatives, and have had opportunities presented before me because of people who have referenced me.

TIMMERY: What's been your greatest accomplishment, thus far?

LINDA: Establishing myself as a paid working freelance artist has been my greatest accomplishment this far.

TIMMERY: Why is girl power and sisterhood important to you?

LINDA: Girl power and sisterhood are important to me because growing up, I was under the impression that I had no close girlfriends. I felt disliked and misunderstood. Little did I know, that I shared that same feeling with lots of other people. And while The Spice Girls made girl power a popular idea in 90's, as a young adult in 2015, I know first firsthand how influential and motivating the movement of sisterhood can be. I owe and thank many women in my life for guiding and loving me for my creativity and efforts in creating a safe space for men and women.

TIMMERY: Who are some artists, musicians, and/or designers to watch out for?

LINDA: Artists: Ifryoka (PukePaint.com) and BB Barrios (bpointless.etsy.com), Designers: Peggy Noland (peggynoland.com) & Seth Bogart (wackywacko.com)

Musicians: The Cooper Gamins (Mexico) and Irene Diaz (L.A.)

TIMMERY: Name 3 of your favorite girl bosses!

LINDA: Ana Flores founder / Latina Bloggers Connect (lbconnect.com), Everyone in the Con Fuerza Collective (confuerzacollective.org), Deborah Deras, keynote motivational speaker (DeborahDeras.com)

TIMMERY: What's in your purse?

LINDA: Aside from my keys, wallet, and iPhone 6+, I have to carry my KatVon D lip stains, black eyeliner pens, my case for my glasses with the cleaning cloth and spray, and a condom cuz you never know.
